An isolation transformer is an electrical device that is used to isolate one electrical circuit from another. It works by providing a electrical barrier between two circuits, typically between the electrical supply and the load, to prevent the flow of direct current (DC) or unwanted electrical signals between the two.
Isolation transformers are commonly used in applications where electrical isolation is required for safety reasons, such as medical equipment, audio systems, and testing equipment. They are also used to eliminate ground loops, reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), and to balance loads in three-phase power systems.
Isolation transformers typically consist of two separate windings of wire on a common magnetic core. The windings are electrically isolated from each other, allowing them to operate at different electrical potentials. They can be designed to provide either step-up or step-down voltage transformation, depending on the application.
